Setting Ring
when passing an Engagment Ring down, what is more significant the setting or the stone?

My father proposed to my mother with my grandmothers ring. my parents have offered the same ring to me. The dilemma I face is that my mother is still alive and wears her ring. My grandmother is also still alive. If I were to use the same diamond, I feel I would have to use a different setting to make the ring personnel. I am not sure how I would feel about using my mothers ring to propose. thoughts?

My now husband gave me his grandmothers ring when he asked me to marry him...it was plain in yellow gold..the diamond was 1karat diamond..I wear white gold so I asked if i could put it in a white Gold Setting...he said I could put it on a post and wear it in my nose if that was what made me happy..its beautiful in a white gold setting..but means alot knowing it was his grandmother diamond
