Suggestion: have a jeweler check the stones because i don't think ordinary people know how to do that
Also: think about what kind of setting you have and what your lifestyle is like because if you have small children you may be knocking the ring around a lot in the course of daily activity and the setting that looked so beautiful when you were younger might not be practical

He's on the right track by avoiding the chain stores. Jarred's or Anglo might be okay, but stay away from Zales, Helzberg's, Kay's, and others which are exclusively located in malls. I bought my fiance's engagement ring at Joseph's, which was one of the founding companies of the AGS (American Gemological Soceity). I also looked at Iowa Diamond, and while they are a reputable store and were very helpful, there were a lot of small signs telling me not to buy anything there. For example, the salesperson I was dealing with kept reminding me constantly that they sell 3-4 engagement rings every day--which I didn't think sounded like that many, but then again, this is Iowa.

If he wants quality, he'll want to pick out a loose diamond and then choose the ring and setting himself, rather than buying something that's already premounted.Tell him to spend at least 4 hours at each high-quality store he visits. I actually spent 2 or 3 afternoons/evenings going between two stores, then took almost an entire day off from work to finish up my selection and do some last-minute unexpected haggling. And that was after an entire Saturday of doing research online for 12 hours or so.

Do some research online and learn about the "4 C's" of purchasing a diamond--Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carats. Note that cut does not refer to the shape, such as round, marquis, princess, or emerald. It refers to the precise ratios and angles of the particular shape. For your friend's price range, a VS2- or SI1-clarity grade is probably appropriate, because any flaws will be too small for anyone to see without 10x magnification. Based on my original research online, I was set on a VVS2 clarity grade, but after seeing the diamonds myself, I decided to go for a slightly lower clarity in order to get a significantly better color grade, and chose an F-color (colorless), SI1-clarity diamond.

A well-Cut Round brilliant will sparkle more than any other shape because it has been mathematically engineered to reflect almost all of the light that enters it. They will also display more "fire" (diffracted colors) because of all the carefully-positioned facets and angles. However, some people aren't as much into sparkle and prefer other shapes.

Go to a nice, local fine jewelry store and have them explain grading to you and show you some diamonds of different grades (the "4 C's") and shapes (Round Brilliant, marquis, square, emerald, etc.). Don't act like you know everything already; let them explain it all in detail and demonstrate what they mean by showing you several diamonds, because reading about diamonds online and studying them yourself are two completely different things. Ask questions about every one of the C's, and make sure they address all of your questions completely. If the place you go to doesn't have a grading for the Cut, for example, don't count them out but at least make sure you check out a couple of other stores that do sell diamonds with cut grades. That said, you shouldn't put all of your emphasis on the grade. If the grade is a little off but you like the look of the diamond, then buy it.

Your jeweler will take you to a grading room with special simulated daylight lighting under 5000 Kelvin lights. This is key, because most jewelry stores have a different kind of lighting in their storefronts which is designed specifically to make even poor-quality gems shine like crazy. If your jeweler can't show you the diamond unmounted, without the ring, leave and find a quality jeweler.

I'd highly recommend looking at the diamonds with both a loupe and a gemoscope, as well as with your naked eye. With one diamond that had an SI1 clarity grade (small inclusions visible under 10x magnification), I was able to see a very disturbing flaw with my naked eyes. After I pointed out the flaw, my jeweler also saw it. After some close examination, he found a hard-to-see inclusion under the gemoscope and showed it to me. It turned out that you couldn't see the actual inclusion with the naked eye, but because the diamond was well-cut, that inclusion was reflected and magnified internally within the diamond, making it easy to see without any assistance from a loupe. The jeweler said he would be sure to send that particular diamond back to be regraded.

They will show you several diamonds that aren't mounted in rings. It's important to look at the diamonds this way because you can look at them from different angles, without the ring interfering or adding color. Every diamond should have an AGS or GIA grade. They will also let you look at the diamonds with a jeweler's loupe or a gemoscope (basically a microscope) under 10x magnification, which is what the gemologists use when grading diamonds.

It's good he has set a price range, but at first he should try not to tell them a price and see what they bring out to show him. If it's a good, honest store, they will probably bring out some rings that are a little below what he had in mind. That's perfectly fine; once he's looked at several of them closely, he can always request some larger or higher-grade diamonds. But if they start by bringing out the really extravagant diamonds, he should proceed with caution because they may try to take him for all he's worth.

Not giving the salesperson a price from the start will really throw them off, and they'll realize this is not going to be an easy 30-minute sale. If that makes them work harder to help him, then he knows he will get the best quality and service for his money, both now and in the future.

But if the salesperson starts to get finicky, overeager, and impatient, and your friend can see the lust in the salesperson's eyes, your friend can use that to his advantage. He should get as much help out of them as he can, and keep them thinking he's serious about buying from them.

Note every nuance of how the salesperson behaves toward you. If he lets you sit unattended with the diamonds while he goes to get more to look at, then he trusts you. They should have security cameras if they want to make sure you're not stealing their diamonds. If he puts everything back into envelopes and tucks them in his shirt pocket every time he leaves to get more diamonds, he obviously doesn't trust you, and you should probably be a little more on guard toward him.

Once your friend is close to a decision (that is, once he has a couple of diamonds in his price range that he really likes), he should ask to see an assortment of 10 or so diamonds of varying color grades and slightly different carat weights. Then he should try to sort them himself by color and weight, without any magnification. If he can pick out the same favorites that he had before, then he's almost finished! The next step is to narrow the selection down to one diamond and take it into different lighting conditions with the salesperson: into a somewhat dimmer area, under the bright display lights, and outside. Although going outside might be difficult depending on the store location, any store that won't at least take you over to a window and let you look at the diamond under 3 or 4 other common lighting conditions doesn't deserve your money.

Make sure to also consider any future service the ring might need. Some places will do the rhodium replating on white gold rings for free, while others might charge a modest fee of $20 as needed. The free replating is a sales gimmick, and although it's nice, the cost of replating is miniscule compared to the purchase price of the ring. (If your friend really has the money, he should go for a platinum ring instead.) If one store has several locations that are easy to get to, that's another plus--especially if some locations are near malls, and your fiance can take her ring in for a free cleaning whenever she's out doing some shopping.

Some stores also have very scary policies about trade-in, if you ever decide to switch the ring for a different one; for example, because the fiance prefers a different style or because the two of you have decided to "upgrade" her ring. Iowa Diamond, for instance, requires you to trade up to a ring of at least twice the value of the original one. Joseph's, on the other hand, said that if my fiance wanted a different style of ring, we could take her ring back and they would exchange it for any other ring at any time, giving us credit for at least the full original purchase price.

One more little tidbit of advice: make sure your friend approaches diamond buying the same way he should buy a car. I found out completely by accident that most places will wheel & deal. They'll take you for all you're worth if you give them the chance, but if you if you get quotes from 2 or more different stores for similarly-graded diamonds and similar rings, you can go back and forth between the two stores and try to get a better deal.

When he picks out a diamond at his favorite store for a better price than the other store, he can go back to the second store and tell them that he's leaning toward the first store. Chances are, the salesperson will drop the price significantly to match or beat the first store. At that point, he can go back to the first store and mention the second store's offer. The first store then will probably either make a new offer or ask him to make an offer, which might save him another couple hundred bucks. If his offer just brings the price down to the next $500 increment (e.g., $2500 or $3000) on either the diamond or the entire ring, the jeweler will gladly accept his offer.
